The second stage of the Monte Carlo Rally contained six speed trials with a total length of 145 km. The morning part was mostly run on snow and ice and, on the contrary, the same speed trials in the afternoon were on slush and in the wet. It was therefore very difficult to choose the right tyres, which all the drivers confirmed.
The Hänninen-Markulla pairing won one speed trial, finishing in leading positions in the others, and ended today in second place overall with a deficit of 48 seconds on the leader Hirvonen. The French crew Vouilloz-Veillas also won one speed trial and, after the second stage, remained fourth overall with a loss of 1:34:3 min. on the leading driver. The Czech Kopecký-Starý crew was followed by bad luck today, as well. Their great performances moving up were hampered by a burst tyre and after today Kopecký and Starý are in ninth position overall.
Juho Hänninen: “It was very slippery today, it was very difficult and we couldn’t go faster.”
Nicolas Vouilloz: “It was very difficult, we are pleased that we are at the end of today’s stage. We almost did not complete the last speed trial.”
Jan Kopecký: “We changed a wheel again today, I don’t know how it happened. Unfortunately, it’s part of rallying, we will keep fighting, the end is tomorrow.”
